General Yoga Questions
What actually is Yoga?
The word yoga is a Sanskrit word meaning union; the union between the individual and the universe.
It was originally a practice of meditation, but over a 10,000 year process it has become something quite different.
Today yoga is much more focused on the physical and involves moving the body through a series of different poses and postures. Each one boasting different benefits for the body.
Some types of yoga have a focus on the spiritual element, and some are purely focused on improving the physical body.
What are the benefits of Yoga?
The physical benefits of yoga include; improved strength, improved flexibility, improved posture.
Yoga also has mental and spiritual benefits, including an improved sense of wellbeing, a greater connection between mind and body, a clearer mind, and reduced stress levels.
How often should I practice Yoga?
To really see the benefits of yoga, I recommend doing yoga a minimum twice per week. Ideally 4-5 times a week if you can find the time!
Is Yoga any different from just stretching?
Stretching is simply lengthening tight muscles, which is known for being pretty ineffective.
Yoga is much more focused on moving through postures to gradually work into tight areas and strengthen weaker areas whilst syncing the movement to breath.
The outcome is not only improved flexibility but also strength and wellbeing.
Can I do Yoga if I am not flexible?
Of course! One of the main physical benefits of yoga is improved flexibility. If you are not flexible, then even more reason to get yourself on the mat!
How do I begin Yoga?
If you are looking to begin your yoga journey, either find a local beginner class or book some private yoga sessions. Do I need to lose weight before I start to do Yoga?
Absolutely not. Anyone can practise yoga regardless of physique or fitness levels. Yoga, combined with a healthy diet, is a great way to lose weight and improve health.
Stick to beginner classes at first until your strength is built before moving onto intermediate classes.
My muscles are shaky during Yoga, is that normal?
Shaking whilst holding strong postures is perfectly normal. In fact, it’s a sign that your body is working hard. The shaking usually decreases as strength increases!

Too busy at work to get to class? Bring me into your office!
The yoga in the workplace is specifically designed to reverse the effects of a desk bound lifestyle and reduce stress levels.
Usually held in a board room, meeting room or communal space, with classes often held before work, during lunchtime or after work.
How will Yoga help my/my staff’s work?

What poses can I do at my desk?
When stressed we store lots of tension in the neck, shoulders and upper back.
A simple 5-minute series of movements can help to release some of this tension:
1. Roll the shoulders back and forth 10 times
2. Rolling the neck slowly clockwise and anti-clockwise 10 times
3. Stretch the arms over head interlocking the thumbs and stretch side to side 6 times.
4. Interlock fingers behind the back and stretch hands away from you, squeezing shoulder blades together and stretching out the chest.
Do I/we need to bring/provide Yoga mats?
All equipment can be provided if needed.
What should I wear?
Loose comfortable clothing/yoga pants/gym wear.
I am embarrassed to do Yoga with my colleagues…
Just remember no one actually looks at anyone else because they’re too busy focusing on themselves! I can offer a women/men only classes option if required.

Where can I have my private Yoga lesson?
You can have your class wherever you want, either in the comfort of your own home, or local park (weather permitting), at your work place or in the gym. I also offer yoga sessions in my home studio space in Chelmsford.
What does a private Yoga lesson cost?
My private yoga sessions range from £50 to £70 an hour depending on how far I need to travel. I offer a reduced cost if you buy a block of yoga sessions.
Do I need any equipment?
All equipment can be provided including a mat, blocks, strap, bolster etc, should you require.
What should I wear?
Loose comfortable clothing / yoga pants / gym wear – whatever you feel comfortable in and can move easily.
